An In-Depth Review of the Oster 6 Slice Convection Toaster Oven
I recently tried out the Oster 6 slice convection toaster oven for the purpose of providing an in-depth review to anyone considering purchasing this countertop appliance. I moved my usual toaster oven into storage for four weeks and used the Oster in its place to get a good idea of how well it works with regular use. Here is my review.
This toaster oven comes in both black and stainless steel; the unit I chose was the latter. Either option will cost you about $80 plus extra for shipping. I removed my new Oster toaster oven from the box and inspected it. It has a nice modern, boxy shape which is accentuated by the stainless steel finish. It is a bit on the light side, something to be expected in this price range. Oster has attempted to compensate for this by providing four rubber feet to keep it in place on your countertop. The included baking and broiling pans are obviously on the cheap side; again, I would completely expect that in this low price range. That does not present a serious issue for me, since I have many suitable baking dishes I can use instead of the included pieces. There are three control knobs making operation simple compared to some of the digital models available today.
I began my review period by preparing toast. This unit is listed as a 6 slice model, yet I was only able to fit four slices in it. Perhaps if you use very small loaves of bread, it would be able to accommodate a full six slices. The four slices of bread were beautifully toasted in a short amount of time (about three minutes.)
My next toaster oven cooking task for this review was a homemade blueberry pie. I used a nine inch pie dish, which was able to fit due to the rounded back of this model. The pie crust cooked evenly and perfectly flaky, something which is not always possible in a toaster oven. This unit does get hot enough to brown (it goes up to 450 degrees F.) and the convection fan keeps the temperature even throughout the baking cycle. This unit did get extremely hot while the pie was baking; this is common with most models that cost less than $200. They just don’t offer the insulation you find on the high-end ovens. You do need to be careful to not touch anything other than the stay-cool handle while the oven is in use. I would suggest always using oven mitts to avoid injury. You also need to allow the full four inches of clearance on all sides that the manufacturer calls for in the owner’s manual. The excessive heat may present a problem in homes with young children or anyone who is accident prone.
I used this toaster oven for most of my cooking during the review period. I was surprised at just how roomy the interior is. I had no trouble roasting an entire turkey leg. Although this unit does let a lot of heat into the kitchen compared to high-end models, it still heats up the room less than a full-sized oven does. The convection fan, while somewhat loud, is considerably quieter than what you will find on many cheap toaster ovens. I checked the temperature of the oven several times and always found it to be within 10 degrees of what it was set for. Overall, I think this toaster oven is a good value for the price.
