Our whole culture is an addiction, so any reference to specific addictions is a ludicrous waste of time until we pave over Madison Ave. to Wall Street and put in a theme park called "Parking Lot World." Cartoonish replicas of famous gasoline cars could be demonized to make us feel better about our roller skates and bicycles. I need a drink.

You go, Jim! As one of your NaNoWriMo co-conspirators, I especially like your comment that placing your character in the time of your youth -- should that be what happens -- automatically makes it historical fiction. Ha ha. You know I can relate. My material is like a lava lamp. Here's to being walking anachronisms.

This NaNoWritMo is a lot like a really big free write, but with an effort to make sense and sustain a story line (or two or three). The motto is, "Don't get it right, get it written!"

It will be tough for me not to look back because I am really more of an editor than a writer. Or at least have been up to this point.

As for using stuff from the Flinty Gaze, I'm going to try not to -- except for the basic characters, settings, etc. Probably some of the actual writing will work its way in, eventually, but I want to write 50,000 new words of fiction in November.

This is such a cool idea! Mitch will make a great amateur detective and you have lots of good stuff on the Flinty Gaze already. I really like the idea of writing every day for a month without looking back but I wonder if I'd have the willpower NOT to look. :)

Up to now, the games I've written are Windows only. But I will do some that can be compiled for any OS.

Some visual arguments make stronger, clearer arguments than others. A political cartoon or a public sculpture will be designed from the start to make a point, to convey a feeling or attitude about its subject. With photos, if you don't doctor them, it is likely to be happy accident if a clear point is conveyed -- unless a pro with an experienced eye is taking a bunch of shots and then selecting just the right one . . . Like most amateurs, I am just happy with a good exposure, not too dark or too bright! As for this photo, I would say it is more positive than negative, mostly because the walker seems to be strong and purposeful in her movements.

Visual rhetoric is an interesting concept. Like literature there are many interpretations of one picture. Is this a sad, lonely, sandy lane or a peaceful, energizing path to nature? Could be both. Could be neither. Could be something else entirely. It's up to the viewer. What fun!

LOL. In six months you've gone from no blogs to three blogs and I really like all three. Each has a different audience and purpose. (I guess that comment just labeled me as a fellow comp. teacher!)

Mitch Gann's journal is a great idea! I can see it turning into a published book someday.

Keep writing!
