A study reported in the current issue of Nature suggests that intelligence is linked to brain growth patterns in adolescence. According to one of the researchers, “It’s not that brainy children have more grey matter. The story of intelligence is in the trajectory of brain development.”In the study, researchers split children into three groups on the basis of IQ scores, and discovered a characteristic growth pattern in the brains of children with the highest scores.
Guinevere Eden, director of the center for the Study of Learning at Georgetown University, is quoted in a Forbes article as saying, “The findings of the study also demonstrate that brain changes are advantageous, and this knowledge has important implications for educational outcome. . . .”
Are student brain scans to replace standardized tests?
Maybe that wouldn’t be half-bad. At least it might eliminate teaching to the test.
